There's an old joke, and kind of crude but it sheds light: A woman is having a hard time figuring out what to give her kids for Christmas, one 
is a pessimist and the other an optimist. Here friend the psychologist suggests she asks the pessimist what he wants and give it to the optimist, and ask the optimist what he wants and give it to the pessimist. When asked the optimist says "Mom it's hard this year, but maybe a new bike?" The pessimist says "I don't care, a bag of crap for all I care." Come Christmas morning the pessimist is saying "A bike? Great, now I am really going to hurt myself!" Meanwhile, the optimist is digging thru the bag and throwing manure everywhere. "Son, what are you doing,?" asks the mom to which the optimist replies "Mom, there is bound to be a pony somewhere in this bag."
