Living the Waukesha County Life and Real Estate Dream:Tom's Blog: July 2009

 Often I make reference to many of all the great things one can do in the Kettle Moraine area. It was not too long ago someone asked "Hey Tom Braatz, what is a Kettle Moraine?" Well it's not so much what is it, but also where it is. By definition, per Wikipedia  "A moraine is any glacially formed accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris (soil and rock) which can occur in currently glaciated and formerly glaciated regions, such as those areas acted upon by a past ice age. This debris may have been plucked off the valley floor as a glacier advanced or it may have fallen off the valley walls as a result of frost wedging. Moraines may be composed of debris ranging in size from silt-like glacial flour to large boulders. The debris is typically sub-angular to rounded in shape. Moraines may be on the glacier's surface or deposited as piles or sheets of debris where the glacier has melted. Moraines may also occur when glacier- or iceberg-transported rocks fall into the sea as the ice melts."

 Continued, and by definition by Wikipedia the Kettle Moraine is a large moraine in the state of Wisconsin stretching from Walworth County in the south to Kewaunee County in the north. It has also been referred to as the Kettle Range and, in geological texts, as the Kettle Interlobate Moraine.

The moraine was created when the Green Bay Lobe of the glacier, on the west, collided with the Lake Michigan Lobe of the glacier, on the east, depositing sediment. The western glacier formed the Bay of Green Bay, Lake Winnebago and the Horicon Marsh while the eastern one formed Lake Michigan. Themajor part of the Kettle Moraine area is considered interlobate moraine, though other types of moraine features, and other glacial features are common.The moraine is dotted with kettles caused by buried glacial ice that subsequently melted. This process left depressions ranging from small ponds to large lakes and enclosed valleys. Elkhart Lake, Geneva Lake, Big Cedar Lake are among the larger kettles now filled by lakes. Parts of the area have been protected in the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Now, the real question is what can I do? What is there to do and see in the Kettle Moraine? What's going on in Kettle Moraine? The answer can take a long time. There is an old saying that "Seeing is believing". In my career of 23 years I have seen a lot of Waukesha County real estate agents come and go, and I have many that are my dear friends. some I have known for years, and some for just a few years. The one thing I do know is I need to always give thanks where thanks is due. I first came to Re/Max in 1989 and with an exception of a brief stint with another company, and owning two of my own companies for awhile, I have learned that I need to do what I do best; sell Waukesha County real estate until one day I make a geographical move. It does make me feel pretty good every time I turn on a TV and see another Re/Max commercial. The real thanks goes to the glue, the energy, the pulse that keeps this Re/Max office in Waukesha County humming; that is Pam Stas. I remember my son's mom always getting upset with me because everytime I would go to a store with her I would think there was no reason to be in any store for more than five minutes. In and out, get what you need, throw the cashier some money, and out the door. It's no wonder she would tell me to go sit in the car before I drove her nuts in the store. Me, Tom Braatz? I had to sit in the car because she wanted to shop more. Later in life I would discover the exact nature of what was the essence of just looking. Delis, bakeries, elegant and casual cuisine, and all types of magnificent foods are just waiting for you to enjoy.The Lake Country is known for its large number of lakes, and in the northwestern corner of Waukesha County it is often referred to as "Lake Country" by local residents. This includes Pewaukee, Delafield, Hartland, Merton, Nashotah, Chenequa, Okauchee Lake, Oconomowoc, Summit, and Lac La Belle. The cities, towns, and villages all have their own unique charm. It was a very productive day and when it was nearing the end I asked my son what he felt like doing. He has adopted a new hobby that gets to be pretty time consuming , but at the same time is very fun and a way for him and his Dad to hang out together and stare at the water. After we ate lunch and focused on our mission he grabs his poles, his bait, his seat, his worms and we go out to find the prettiest spot possible to fish for about four hours, This time is good for Spencer and I do talk Dad to son talk about troubles and life. It's our moment. We may sit at one stop for two hours and then pack it all up and move to another spot where we think the fish moved and  migrated. The beauty of the lake surrounding us, and the wildlife and people make it pure enjoyment. IT is something we also look forward to, When times get hard one always they can have that talk with their child with something in the innocence of holding onto a fishing pole. Even if nothing bites the pole we went through the motions

 It is not uncommon these days to be driving along a country road and see the remnants of a one room school house. These are a lot more common than some think. Many of the brick one room school houses have been converted to single family homes. I always get a smile by looking at the cornerstone or cap print with the year it was built. Every so often I come into North Lake which is north of Hartland, Wisconsin and I see the same one room school house sitting there abandoned for years. It has been there for as long as I can remember and I know relatives that have past away now that had gone to school there. When you think of the makeup of school in Wisconsin and the history that existed in these school houses.These are everywhere in Wisconsin. From Washington Island to Lacrosse, to Sheboygan to Ixonia. These have their wonderful mark in history everywhere and I have the luxury to hear from older folks what it was like to learn in one with all the other grades. The last operable one which still used the out house was the one on Washington Island which is now the Island Rec center and art gallery. In the Waukesha County Real estate market there are still examples and rich history to accompany them and they are a tell tale story of not that long ago. Today, they are just a memory and schools are magnificent in Waukesha County.
