Strength can be found in the stangest places: reaching out for light

I went to a listing appointment the other day. I remember the day well because it was one of those unbearable cold days that become synonymous with Wisconsin winters. I did not get any ice fishing, snow mobile, or anything else fun like in this year. Heck, anticipation had me sell my snow blower. This I should have kept and then sold it. The new year is taking off, my objectives are in order, my game plan is fine tuned, and I tend to be picking up every phone in site with the thought of a prospect on the other end.

As I walked up to this home and I was thinking who in the world would want to be out walking in this noise I was taken back by something that really made me think that everything is reaching for strength, for growth, for light. The door I went to was on the southeast corner of this home and right next to the door was a window well, and a dryer vent going. Looking down I saw the start of little heads, perhaps tulips, or some type of perennials taking advantage of the sun light, and the heat from the dryer vent each day. It is truly amazing how tenacious and determined some things are.

January is moving along, so is 2009, and yet 2008 is still a daily reminder

The other day I did a blog about it being Groundhog day on February 2nd. I was thinking at the time of writing that post that Spring was right around the corner,and it was a bout to be warmer weather. I really did not have to endure to coldness this year and was on my way to Utopia. As fate had it I would have to commit to doing what I had to do. Last year saw its share of challenges for all; the young, the old, the unfortunate, the struggling, the sick, and the list goes on. When I think of that ground hog I think that it brings promise to me again. My son and I laugh about the littlest things, and as a parent he actually will have a tendency to disagree with me often. That's okay with me; he has had to grow up pretty fast in the last half a year and more, had enough challenges for a young man, and yet he possesses this wonderful attitude. He and I were talking and reminiscing about people, friends, loved ones, and more recently. It was my son that pointed out that there is a lot to be learned from 2008. Sure, 2009 will be a whole new year, but it is rather hard when we try to forget about what makes us successful Realtors. Then again, perhaps that is why we are so optimistic, enduring, and have a passion to work even harder and stronger in business. A weeding process has taken place, some of the greatest individuals known to Real Estate decided to move on, and for those that are looking at the greatest Real Estate market in history that is coming at us I must say. "You will never hear me whine again when I have to go to the office and get offers that are faxed to me early, and they have to have a response that day." I am so, so happy and grateful that I can always get a coffee at the Kwiktrip, along with a hot dog for Lars, and we just relish the idea of working 24/7 productively as evr before. May you have your best year ever, and the next year to even be another banner year!'

Creative Minds Are Seldom Tidy

Recently I had to take a step back and review my paperwork reduction practices. Joy Shong had made the mention to us that we had more lead files, offer and listing files, and miscellaneous files accumulated that she thought it could be hard pressed to keep track of such a project. Not to be put in the spotlight,and being the salesman I am, I took a minute out and took a good look at our files. "That's a good point, and I am glad you brought it up." I then replied with "Creative minds are seldom tidy"

Probably not the best rebuttal to come back with. However, I do have to say that after that conversation our system immediately became more paperwork reduction conscience. How so you may ask? Easy, Joy just commenced to file some of the files in a container and was very collective under filing under "G". It's a good thing we are allowed to burn in the country,otherwise, moving the "G" file from the basement offices to the curb to refile them under another "G" file could have been even more effort. The "G" did not make reference to being a genuine file, but rather a garbage file, or for better words a file that is no longer needed. Perhaps I will be a little more selective in comments next time.

It only goes to show you that as Realtors that backing up and keeping files not only applies to the cyber world, but the desk as well. Now where is that file?

My Best Business Branding Ever: The Notorious Happy Go Lucky Lars

I still get a good feeling when someone is looking at me in a convenience store, or gas station and they say "Do I know you?" My general reply is "I have been in Real estate for awhile." The next thing after they either look in my car, or they hesitate for a moment is the ever so spoken words "Your the guy with the great big dog", or "You have the dog in all your pictures, I have seen him on websites" Funny, I was in the picture as well. I thought I knew a lot of people, but it actually is Lars that knows a lot of people. He has become a brand for me that I think would be hard to ever replace. Sure I always use the sayings "See you at closing" or "We look forward to shaking your hand at closing.", but through thick and thin it has been a 120 pound German Shepherd that has become my greatest name recognition and business awareness. I actually have people that always look forward to Lars updates, him coming to, or going to appointments with me, and the general consensus is they remember Lars a lot faster than they recognize me. The other day I saw someone I had not seen for awhile and the first thing they ask is, well, you guessed it "How is Lars?" Who would think that my little Mr. Moose would turn out to be memorable to thousands of people. I'll take that, after all, he is my side kick, my colleague, he is my friend. I used to laugh about the bumper sticker I had on the back of my Volvo S90 that said "My German Shepherd is smarter than your honor student." I look at Lars sometimes and I think about that sticker just a little bit harder. Do you think I rather favor my dog, and love the little guy like no tomorrow?

Spring, Warmer weather; Come February 2nd all eyes will be on Punxsutawney Phil and Groundhog Day

It was a long year last year. We all made it through some amazing hurdles. The start of the new year saw it's change and promise of a great New Year to come.

However, it is still blazing cold in Wisconsin, and I can't remember a day going by that it did not snow, or at least a little. It's with all my optimism and thoughts that I really anticipate Groundhog day this year. Come on Punxsutawney Phil , show your stuff. If all goes right it will be Spring before we know it, and buyers will be out in droves buying houses faster than they come on the market.

Groundhog Day is February 2nd in the United States.  It is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow.

If he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole.

If the day is cloudy and, hence, shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground.

Many Hearts Can Hurt In A Move: What a child thinks and sees through their eyes

I found myself recently having to sit down with my son Spencer and telling him due to circumstances that were out of my control, and with all we recently went through that we had to move.

Perhaps sometimes a child's home is his domain. He knows everything, he loves everything, his daily rituals are mere routine. To tell him it was going to be easier on us because we did not need a three thousand square foot house seems almost meaningless to him. He asked if we were going to move back to our six thousand square foot house with the pool. I said" No honey, we need to maintain, and we need to get closer to things, and people that can help you if I cannot. He was receptive about possible making a geographic move soon. That would make things easier. It was hard explaining that "Bud" the parakeet, and "Shirley" the Hamster, as well as "Abby" our last Golden Lab needed to enjoy their long deserved rest. He knows that  Sometimes you have to say good bye to old friends, so one day we can say hello again.

In the end, the fish aquarium gets backed up, the seventy inch televisions, guitar hero, tons of memorabilia. Lastly Chance the Golden Lab and Lars the moose of a German Shepherd will jump in the car and we drive away.

Pictures are for catching moments but a memory will last forever in my mind. Fun, Joy, Caring,Sad, laughter, hurt, pain, illness, hope,reality, acceptance, memories, memories, memories. It's so sad to see Spencer hurt.Is it me?  Or does is my whole Universe revolve around a magnificent young man?

My friends ask me if I could take back time would I; it would have not mattered, it was out of my hands.

There Is No Better Time To Buy A Waukesha County Lake Home in Wisconsin

HEvery weekend lately I have been showing Lake homes to perspective, qualified buyers.What reall is amazing is the cost of each home is incredibly priced. Four years ago I whould she a common three bedroom home for sale well into the millions. Having lived here most of my life I saw the prices just go up and up.

For example; I sold a 4 bedroom, 1 and 1/2 bath home on Lake drive that was immaculate. It even had parking slabs, garages, firplaces, docks, great Lake frontage, and a boat house. It closed at $110,000.This was 1987 ans I thought I has just sole the most expensive home on the Lake.

I readily saw these homes skyrocket in price. The home I sold for 110K four years ago would have been $860,000. It now would be about $500,000. The prices have come down. The three homes I showed last week were one on Okauchee  lake that was a short sale, and needed some work. Excellent frontage. It is for sale for $265,000. The Lake home in Muskego on Muskego Lake was $375,000 with excellent frontage, and the home on Pewaukee was small but stll had direct frontage on Pewaukee Lake for only $389,000.

These same homes would have been selling three years ago for about $490,000 Okaukee. $625,000 Muskego, $535,000 pewaukee. Of course there are many magnificent homes that can still get you into the tens of millions, but I was not looking at those. Wishful thinking.

I am a Lake Expert, I have lived on Lakes, my have had my own Real Estate businesses in Waukesha County, and I know manyof these homes intiminty. I can not think of a better time in History to be able to get on a great Lake, with a great rate, and there is selection.
